NAME CHANGE Good Afternoon, Honorable Senator Avery L. Lewis, Chair of the Committee on Government Operations, Veterans Affairs, Consumer Protection, and Members of the 36th Legislature present. My name is Stanley Jacobs, and I am the leader of the Ten Sleepless Knights. I am proud to be here today to express my support for Bill No. 36-0121 to rename the Peter Carl Limpricht Park to the TSK Park in Honor of the Ten Sleepless Knights. When me and Greenbug agreed to raise a band to play music, we had all kind of thing in our head about it. First thing was that we would play every kind of popular music that we knew: Calypso, Mambo, Guaracha, Bolero, Chachacha, Merengue, all kind of Latin music, Rock and Roll, Soul, Rhythm and Blues, all them thing. And we were capable too, since our nucleus consisted of Greenbug, Te, Edgie, and me, who already had played in other bands, like the Vibratones, the Glen Bough Combo, the Ohaldo Williams Band, Archie Thomas Band, Wesley Thomas Band, Simmonds Brothers Band and Joseph Parris Band. So you could say that we were already seasoned musicians. …

Even though we were thinking of all the different types of music, what never came to mind was our own music. Anyway, reality hit us in the face when we picked up our instruments and started to play. The instruments that we had were Quelbe instruments: Pipe, Steel, Squash, Guitar, Ukulele, and Flute. On top of that, we started playing the songs that we grew up knowing, which were songs we heard from the popular bands, the radio, and from Stanford, Raleigh, Splucka, and Pierpont. As we continued playing, our popularity grew to the point that we became a part of the Crucian musical landscape. The response from our community was such that we got inspired to make it our mission to continue to preserve and perpetuate our precious cultural music and dance so that they will be passed on to our descendants. On behalf of that unusual aggregate of somewhat exceptional, eccentric , and outlandish characters known as the Ten Sleepless Knights, hearty and sincere gratitude to the Virgin Islands Legislaturean d a special Crucian hug up and thanks to Senators Marise C. James, Clifford Joseph Sr., Kenneth L. Gittens, Angel L. Bolques Jr., and Hubert L. Frederick for introducing and co-sponsoring Bill No. 36- 0121. We never expected that our love and expression of music, especially our music, would result in this momentous and pre-eminent honor of officially having a part of St. Croix named after us. Also, we could not reach this point, or last fifty-five plus years without the sustenance of our beloved people.
