Eros OCT iz 2005 ACTNO. 6814 BILL NO. 26-0018 GOVERNOR TWENTY-SIXTH LEGISLATURE OF THE VIRGIN ISLANDS Regular Session 2005 To amend title 24, chapter 1, of the Virgin Islands Code to increase the minimum wage to $6.15 beginning January 1, 2007 ---0--- WHEREAS, the current federal minimum wage is $ 5.15; and WHEREAS, according to the Fair Labor Standards Act, state governments may set a higher minimum wage than that of the federal; and WHEREAS, several states, including California, Washington, Maine, Massachusetts and Oregon have enacted legislation raising the minimum wage above the federal minimum wage; and WHEREAS, the federal minimum wage has not increased since September 1, 1997, although the Consumer Price Index has shown a significant increase between September 1997 and February 2003; and WHEREAS, the cost of living on the Virgin Islands has increased tremendously, however wages have not been adjusted accordingly, thereby causing an increased incidence in the number of “working poor”; and WHEREAS, increasing the minimum wage will serve to foster the declared policy of the Legis …
