Itis believed that rice which was retailed to the consumer two moaths ago at from 12 to 15 cents per pound, durivg the next few weeks will he as low as _eight cents per pound retail. : Theregis probably in the island and afloat 356,000 pockets of ric%, a sufficient supply under ‘normal conditions for at least ninety days. If this rice is sold to the consumer at prices based on the current market, a large quantity of rice will be sold at a loss to the importer, but at considerable gain to the consu- mer. * o : The rice market commenced to decline early in June and since that time has been more or less on the toboggan. targe quantities of rice were then on order for shipment to Porto Rice, 2 con- siderable quantity of which was held, up owing to strike conditions here. but which has since been delivered. FRIDAY 6ra AUGUST 1920. meantime the market has gone down and rice which at the time it was pur- chased had a market value of ten to twelve cents is now worth from six to eight cents. ' On a considerable volume of rice that has reached Porto Rico in the last two or three weeks there has been an actu- al decline of $5 per bag, or five cents a pould, since it was purchased. Various explanations are given for the decline in the rice market. One is that the mills in the States and rice brokers have on hand a considerable volume of medium and low grade rices which they have Leen unable to dispose of and the new crop rice will be in harvest in a very short time. Prodably 100,000 bags of rice have been cansigned to Porto Rico since the slump in the market In addition torices which were on order. This has rather glutted the rice market here and it is said that the e has been a great deal of money lost by rice mills and dealers as a result of the silnmp. If the low prices are passed on to the consumer this will be practically the fircst instance in wiich the consumer will be able to buy a staple commodity at anything like a pre-war price. ; Because of the slump in the market a great deal of rice which has arrived here in the last fevws weeks has been rejected and in many instances the mills and brokers have made very large concessions to the purchaser.
