Where Can I Get It: VIMAS NPS video: A 23-minute video filmed in the Virgin Islands about NPS. The video covers all aspects of NPS from terrestrial runoff to boater waste. Available to educators for free through VIMAS at 692-4046. The Adventures of Camouflage Kid: A 16-minute video filmed in New Jersey about an undercover litter detective at his school. Great for younger students. Also has a great animated segment to reinforce connections between storm drains and local water bodies. Available to educators for free through VIMAS at 692-4046. The Adventures of Camouflage Kid: A 16-minute video filmed in New Jersey about an undercover litter detective at his school. Storm Drain Stenciling Materials: The materials needed for the storm drain stenciling activity should be available at your local hardware store. You will need a wire brush or broom to clean the area you plan to paint. You will also need traffic marking paint, this is the same type of paint that is used for traffic lane markings. Yellow should be used on black top/asphalt while blue shows up well when painting on concrete. Two brand names of paint are Upside-Down Paint and Stripe Traffic Marker Paint by Seymour. Duct tape will allow you to tape the stencil and newspaper to the ground near the drain. The stencils are re-usable and can be borrowed from VIMAS at 692-4046. Permission for Storm Drain Stenciling Project: You should contact the regulatory agency in charge of the roads in the area you plan to stencil six to eight weeks in advance of your project. St. Croix Public Works can be reached at 773-1290 (Director of Highway Engineering). If you are interested in stenciling on private property you would approach the landowner, or if it is a housing community you would contact the housing authority. Send them a letter detailing who is involved in the project, what you will be doing, the stencil message, the area you would like to stencil and a tentative project date. Request written permission from them and give them a date that you need to hear back from them. A week or so after you send or deliver the letter, follow up with a phone call. On your stenciling day, make sure to have copies of your written permission on hand.
