All of the following applications have useful help files. In addition, I have developed handouts for selected applications. It should be noted that other applications perform the same functions. I selected the following as free (shareware), easy to use, powerful, industry standards. When asked your username/account will be something like cbalch@uvi.edu. Good luck. Install the software on your hard drive: Place the disk UVI Dial-In Access Files in drive A: Start Windows Switch to File Manager Select drive A: Double-click on install.bat More information is in the handout Windows. Make a new program group: Switch to Program Manager Under the File Menu Choose NEW Select Program Group and press OK Type in a description, I suggest Communications Add icons to your new group Activate Program Manager (first screen in Windows). Activate your new program group by clicking in it. Tcpman: Required to Dial-In Under the File Menu Choose NEW Select Program Item and press OK Browse for C:/WAPPS/TRUMPET Select TCPMAN.EXE and press OK Press OK again and the Icon should appear. Connect by selecting Login under the Dialer Menu. Disconnect by selecting Bye from the Dialer Menu. Eudora: An Email Application Under the File Menu Choose NEW Select Program Item and press OK Browse for C:/WAPPS/ Eudora Select Weudora EXE and press OK Press OK again and the Icon should appear. Add your personal information: Under the Special Menu open Configuration More information is available in the Eudora handout. Netscape: A WWW Browser Under the File Menu Choose NEW Select Program Item and press OK Browse for C:/WAPPS/ Netscape Select Netscape EXE and press OK Press OK again and the Icon should appear. Add your personal information: Under the Options Menu open Preferences then select Mail and Proxies. NX: A Newsgroup Reader Under the File Menu Choose NEW Select Program Item and press OK Browse for C:/WAPPS/ NX Select NX.EXE and press OK Press OK again and the Icon should appear. Add your personal information: Under the Config Menu open Setup then add your Full Name and Email Address. The first time you use NX there is a long wait while it retrieves the names of the 5000+ active newsgroups. Hint: When you are asked if you want to retrieve active groups, the answer is usually no. Wincode: Used to code files for Email Included for completeness. It does not need an icon. Both Eudora and NX perform many of the functions of Wincode. WS_FTP: A FTP Client Included for completeness. While Netscape will perform FTP (File Transfer Protocol) functions, this application is much better. Under the File Menu Choose NEW Select Program Item and press OK Browse for C:/WAPPS/WS_FTP Select WS_FTP.EXE and press OK Press OK again and the Icon should appear.
