St. Thoms News EFFICIFNT LEADERSHIP On or about October 28, the St. Tho- mas Labor Union was notified by the Stevedoring Companies (West India Co. Ltd. and E. A. Berne) that they had proposed to make the following veduc- tion in wages: 19 cen:s per hour for longshoremen instead of 22 cents time and a half instead of double for overtime, effective November 1. On receipt of this communication, President Moorehead of the St. Thomas ’ L.abor Union heid a meetiag wirh his officers, whereat it was resolved te ask the companies for an extension of time of one week, .so that the Union would be able to submit the matter to the workers interested. While the general sentiment at the meeting was favorable to a reduction, nevertheless, the Board thought that it was their duty to en deavor to obtain the besi terms possible, and further, in matters of such import- ance, it would be unfair tn the men to decide anything wi hout giving them opportunity o be heard. Following the usual proceedings in such cases, the subject was accordingly laid before the workers, and thus having a proper basis for negotiations, Presi- dent Moorehead requested a conference with the companies. The meeting took place at the office of the West India Co. itd. atloa m. Nov. 1. Present were Commander Laub and Mr. Mylnmg of #he W. [. Co, Mr. Emile Berne, <«umes. Moorehead and two oificers of the Union.
