Electronic mail is used to quickly send memo like messages and files between computers that are attached to networks. At UVI, Email is free and, through our local Internet connection, we can communicate all over the world! Starting Eudora Start Windows. Find and Double Click the Eudora Icon. Your Email Address Your address is unique to you and automatically recorded for a number of purposes. Keep it private! At UVI, student Email addresses are generally in the form FLLLLLL@ GECKO.UVI.EDU where F is the first letter of your first name and LLLLL is the first five letters of your last name (punctuation is a letter) (i.e. my Email address is cbalch@uvi.edu). Finding other user addresses There is no universal Email addressing system or directory. Finding addresses can be an art. The best way to find an address is to find it in the From section of a message. Otherwise you can ask a person for their address. At UVI you can look up a faculty/staff addresses (and other information) by using the Ph option under the Windows menu of Eudora. Student addresses are not listed. Methods at other institutions vary. There are a number of phone books on the Internet but none are universal. Some of these address books are found in the UVI STX Internet home page. Use Netscape for this. Sending messages and/or files Select New Message from the Message menu or [N]. While in the To: area, type your Email address(es). Press tab or use the mouse to move to the Subject: area. Type in the a short, descriptive subject heading. The heading is like the title of a paper or book. It should explain the intent of your message. Move to the message body area and either type your message or copy and paste it from a word processor. You may send files be using selecting the Attach Document option from the “Message” menu. Most other selections are self-explanatory. When you are done, select Queue or Send from the Message menu. (Which option you see depends on how your switches have been set - see the switches section). Receiving messages or files Check for new mail by clicking the Check Mail option under the File Menu. Double click on the message that you want to read. If your message has a file attached, you will be asked where you want to save the file. Erase messages you no longer need. Responding to a message After reading a message, you can respond by selecting Reply from the Message menu or [R]. Check the To: area to make see whom will get your message. You may add or delete names. Check and edit the Subject: area. Remove unnecessary parts of the original message body by highlighting areas and pressing the backspace or delete keys. Type your response. When you are done, select Queue or Send from the Message menu. Configuration The configuration area is an option under the Special menu. Only set these options once. If your mail is working, they have been set for you. POP Account: YourEmail@gecko.uvi.edu Real Name: Your Real Name SMTP Server: mailhub.uvi.edu Return Address: YourEmail@gecko.uvi.edu Check for Mail Every 0 minutes Ph Server: Gecko.uvi.edu Don’t worry about the rest. Switches The switches option is found under special menu. Many of the switches are individual preference.
