UNIVERSITY OF THE VIRGIN ISLANDS BOARD OF TRUSTEES RESOLUTION Authorizing the approval of a Master of Arts Degree in Mathematics for Secondary Teachers WHEREAS, the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) is committed to K-12 education in the Territory, and its strategic plan includes serving the professional development needs of Virgin Islands teachers, and WHEREAS, the proposed Master of Arts degree in Mathematics for Secondary Teachers program is a collaboration between the VI Department of Education (VIDE), UVI Division of Education, UVI Division of Science and Mathematics and VI Experimental Program to Simulate Competitive Research (VI-EPSCoR), and WHEREAS, this graduate program will also address the needs of students in grades 7 -12 who have a wide variety of strengths and challenges, and WHEREAS, mathematics teachers at the secondary level in Virgin Islands schools have responded positively to a market survey of interest in a Masters degree program in Mathematics at UVI specifically focused on teaching at the secondary level, and WHEREAS, the graduate program proposed is intend …

UNIVERSITY OF THE VIRGIN ISLANDS BOARD OF TRUSTEES RESOLUTION Authorizing the approval of a Master of Arts Degree in Mathematics for Secondary Teachers WHEREAS, the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) is committed to K-12 education in the Territory, and its strategic plan includes serving the professional development needs of Virgin Islands teachers, and WHEREAS, the proposed Master of Arts degree in Mathematics for Secondary Teachers program is a collaboration between the VI Department of Education (VIDE), UVI Division of Education, UVI Division of Science and Mathematics and VI Experimental Program to Simulate Competitive Research (VI-EPSCoR), and WHEREAS, this graduate program will also address the needs of students in grades 7 -12 who have a wide variety of strengths and challenges, and WHEREAS, mathematics teachers at the secondary level in Virgin Islands schools have responded positively to a market survey of interest in a Masters degree program in Mathematics at UVI specifically focused on teaching at the secondary level, and WHEREAS, the graduate program proposed is intended to provide significant strengthening of mathematics and mathematics pedagogy for teachers in the Territory's schools, and WHEREAS, the graduate program is focused on the needs of practicing teachers in the Territory, it will also be open to others who hold a bachelors degree in mathematics or related fields with experience in teaching mathematics at the secondary level, and WHEREAS, this graduate program will be ongoing with a new cohort of a minimum of 16 students beginning every three years, and WHEREAS, this graduate program will serve both the St. Croix and St. Thomas campuses through the use of video-conferencing capabilities, when appropriate, and WHEREAS, this graduate program is grounded in the Principles and Standards of School Mathematics of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, a document that focuses on the concept of inclusion of all students in mathematics learning, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BYTHE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE UNIVERSITY AS FOLLOWS: 4: That the Master of Arts Degree in Mathematics for Secondary Teachers be approved , and 2: That this resolution shall become effective March 11, 2006.
