As advertised in the papers some days ago; the Century Brass Band is now cir- culating the Subseription Lists mention- ed; and on this occasion is asking every one to contribute as best they can to heip the cause. ; This 18 the last $75.00 on the present Instruments now on hand and in good condition; by your help previcusly and by the aid of certain schemes which the band uncertook tre amount of $400.00 has been raised; and now as to raise the last $75.00 balance these lists are bhrought to you for your monetary or materia! aid and support. : You are ecordially invited to attend (and thereby help) the Gala time to be held on July 28th; all being well and everything working satisfactorily. Are we also to be burdened with all the refuse of the Virgin Is- lands? Honorable Members from Christian- sted jurisdiction, [ appeal to you to look peyond your nose, -(if T may use a silang expression) give this matter deep o u RGO A Ni S thought, and your serious consideration. Gentlemen of Frederiksted jurisdiction I have been toid, in jest, or in earnest, I know not, that some day it is hoped to rem)ve the capital of St. Croix from Christiansted and its incorrigible en- trance (and which this present Resolu- tion, I suppose, is to make still more s0), to that town wherz the stranger and the visitor shall not have the incorrigible girls to greet them, but something of a more appealing nature, if this project is a subtle and a sophistic link in the chain, then I appeal toyou,as this is a matter of vital -importance to Christiansted, for your success, if it be, can only be en- ‘hanced to the detriment and ruination of the people and the town of Christian- sted. - One more thought before I resume my seat-—Let us one and all remember be- fore w¢ cast our votes, that wrong is never more strong than when clothe with a particle of right, and the devil is never more dangerous than in the guise of an innocent angel. ‘4th Appointed Member (Blackwood) remarked: Mr. Chairman. [ congratu- late the Honorable 2nd Member for Christiansted Town for his first class speech and the noble picture he bhas drawn of the institution. The Govern- ment is anxious to start this institution, the bulidings on ihe Cay are in guod con- dition, and the Red Cross is ready and willing to contribute towards the main- tenance of the institution. I cannot un- derstand the member’s argument where he says to put the institution on Protes- tant Cay would injure-the good looks of the town; considering that Government has promised that the institution can be removed at any time if the reef is blown and the harbor putin order, I see no reason why members should have any fear to vote for this Resolution. 1 con- sider Government’s proposal a very fair one. Ido not live in the town of Chris- tiansted, but I have done business here for many years. I certain'y recommend the Resolution. 2nd Member for Christiansted Town (Canegaia) remarked: I didn’t quite un- derstand the last speaker. Do I under- stand that because you don’t live in this to~n you want to sign the death war rant of the :eople of this town ? : 4th Appointed Member (Blackwood) answered the last speaker nd said, My aim and object is to legislate for the gen- eral benefit of the people of this island. Very often 1 have sacrificed my own in- terest and leigislate for the benefit of the community. 2nd Appointed Member (Noll) remark ed: Mr. Chairman. I consider the pro- ject of blowing out the reef in Christia- sted Harbor is one that interests every one in this town. I, personally, do not think that such a thing will happen in- gide of five years; however, that is, a question in which the Government is deeplv interested. " The question before the Council today is not whether they are going to blow out the harbor, the question is, w at we are gßing to do with the incorrigibie giris of this town? We have boys and girls in this town who are going from bad to worse, and the judges are Bowerless,ow- . ing to the fact that there is not at pres- | ent a proper institution to receive them. ; The question before the Council today is, i what shall we do with these &hiidren? . Government is asking permission t. use | Protestant Cay as a temporary place to | put these children. We have a place . where we are temporarily taking care of , “hoys, and Government is asking for a ' place to take care temporarily of girls. ~ This is not a question of blocking the . blowing of the reef in the harbor: it is a | question whether this Council is going i to.take an interest in the children and | give its permission to use the Cay until a | bermanent institution can be erected. I ' don’t think a permanent institution ean ! be put on the Cay. If there is.any fear | that .Government will use the Cay as a { permanent place for caring of these . children, why don’t a member of Chris- . tiansted bring in an amendment and say | that it can be used temporarily?
