During the first half of the current year the total exports from the United States to the Virgin Islands amounted to $1,499,825, and imports into the is- lands from foreign eountries $300,449, /gggreaating $1.800,474. Imports into the United States #from the islands were valued at $1,927.456 and exports from the islands to all other countries at $96,166, or a total of $1,131,622. This left a balance of trade against the islands of $668.062 for the first half of 1920, against a corresponding bal z.mc%‘gf $356,987 in 1919 and $643,083 in 1918. > These apparently unfavorable bal- ances may really .indicate greater pros- perity for the islanags. This is due to the fact that ships stores and fuel oil for bunkering purposes were pot included in the exports, while all of the oil and the bulk of the provisions afterwairds sold as ships stores were tnciuded. —New York World. , &L = . as . VIRGIN ISLANDS NOW PROSPEROUS Trade of New Possession With World In- creases 33 Per Cent in Year. [lncle Sam has made the Virgin Is- lands -prosperous according to statistics on the trade of his newest possession. The trade of those isiands with the world .was valued at $4,196,037 in 1919, while in 1918 it was $3,141,775. This was a gain of $1.054,262 or 33 per cent. #Exports were $1,249,346 in 1918 and $1,919,626 in 1919, a gain of $670,179. Imports increased &‘38%083, fzom $1,892,- 429 in 1918 to $2.276,612 last year. With this gratifyin inerease :here was a drop of nearly 50 per ecent in the ‘balance of trade against the iss lands from $64%,083 in 1918 to $356,- 987 in 1919. - e : The major, portion of this valuable commerce was with the United States, the exports from this country increas- ing 1n value $164,014, from $1,640,103 to $1,804,117; and imports from the islands into the States $455,619, from $1,137,501 in 1918 o 0 $1,593,120 in 1919. This was a growth in value of 4oper centinim- ports and 10 per cent in exporis. > The proportionate increase was even more striking in the trade with foreign countries, imports frow which roge 87 per cent, on- $220,069, from 252,- 326 in 1918 to $472,395 in 1919; and correspontding exports $214 560, or 191 per ‘cent from §5111,845 to $326405 This showing was the more remark- able since the operation of the National Prohibition Aect practically- eut off in 1919 the {)rmer valuable .trade in spirits No. 254.
