June 26 U.S. Virgin Islands — Governor Albert Bryan Jr. is again urging the Legislature to work with his administration to address the rising cost of government health insurance. He is calling on senators to take action on what he views as a growing threat to the financial stability of government employees, retirees under 65, and the Government of the Virgin Islands. Since May, Governor Bryan has reached out to lawmakers, encouraging them to convene a hearing or special session to begin meaningful discussions. He stressed the importance of collaboration to develop a sustainable path forward. While the Governor has the authority to call the Legislature into special session, he prefers a cooperative process that respects the legislative branch and supports shared decision-making. “This issue affects thousands of Virgin Islanders and places serious strain on our finances,” Bryan said. “I could call a special session, but this situation calls for cooperation. I am asking the Legislature to meet us at the table and help develop solutions.” The Governor’s renewed call follows confirmation from the Government Employees Service Commission Health Insurance Board that premiums for active employees and non-Medicare retirees are expected to increase significantly in the next fiscal year. The projected increase would add more than $30 million to government spending, pushing total health insurance costs above $190 million. Governor Bryan said the circumstances demand timely action and a commitment to identifying a responsible way forward that protects both public workers and the fiscal health of the government. “This is not only about dollars. It is about making informed decisions that reflect the needs and priorities of our people,” Bryan said. “We must act together to prevent greater strain on employees and the public budget.” The Governor expressed concern that the Legislature has yet to take up the matter, despite repeated outreach. “It is troubling that this issue continues to be overlooked while energy is spent on less urgent matters,” he said. “The longer we wait, the more difficult and costly it becomes.” Bryan closed by reaffirming that his administration is ready to engage in meaningful dialogue and work side-by-side with lawmakers. “My team is ready to meet, listen, and help lead us toward real solutions,” he said. “This is about leadership. And we can move forward if we make the choice to work together.” ### TAGS No tags CATEGORIES Uncategorized Previous Next Comments are closed © 2026 Government of the United States Virgin Islands.
