PRT 101 Introduction to Process Technology Page 1 E. Douglas, P.E. Fall Semester 2008 Class Time and Location: Mondays and Wednesdays – 7:00 to 8:15 P.M. @ the HOVENSA Training School Course Description: Introduction to Process Technology is the first course in the Applied Science in Process Technology Program being offered by the University of the Virgin Islands and sponsored by HOVENSA. This two-year program has been created to train students for careers as Process Technicians in industry. This course serves as the foundation for all of the other courses in the program. Introduction to Process Technology provides an introduction to industrial plant operations, particularly chemical and refinery plant operations Course Objective At the end of this course, students are expected to know the following: • A general history of the chemical process industry • A process technician’s roles, duties, responsibilities and expectations • Applied chemistry and Physics • Plant process and utility systems; • An overview of a typical process plant; • Identification of the various types of process equipment and some basic fundamentals on their operations • The purpose of various types of equipment • How to use and understand Block Flow Diagrams (BFDs), Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) and Piping and Instrument Diagrams (P & IDs) Students are also expected to develop an awareness of the safety, health, and environmental issues affecting the Process Industry. Required Materials: • Introduction to Process Technology 1st Edition (PTEC) – Publisher – Pearson Publishing; ISBN-0-536-17501-2 • A calculator • A three-ring binder for handouts and notes • Access to a Personal Computer and the Internet Grading: There will be a minimum of four in-class tests that will each count as fifteen (15) percent of the final grade. Quizzes/Home assignments/Class Participation will count as twenty (20) percent of the final grade. The final exam will be a comprehensive exam that will count as twenty (20) percent of the overall grade. The dates of the tests have already been tentatively scheduled. If you miss a test, you must present a doctor’s certificate in order to receive a makeup. No other make-ups will be given. Introduction to Process Technology Fall 2008 An unexcused absence during a test will result in a grade of zero. Missing the final exam will result in a grade of zero. Summary of how your Final Grade will be determined: Four (4) in-class Tests -60 Percent (%) Quizzes/Homework Assignments/Class Participation - 20 Percent (%) Final Exam - 20 Percent (%) 100 % Grading Scheme showing assignment of letter grades: 95- 100 A 90 –94 A- 87 – 89 B+ 83 – 86 B 80 - 82 B- 77 – 79 C+ 73 – 76 C 70 - 72 C- 65 - 69 D+ 60 – 64 D 0 - 59 F Course Requirements: Classes are scheduled for Mondays and Wednesdays from 7:00 to 8:15 P.M. All students are required to attend class regularly and punctually and complete homework assignments on time. If a student misses a lecture, then he or she is responsible for any material covered and/or homework assigned in his /her absence. Students are also expected to participate fully in class discussions and problem solving sessions. Students are expected to work independently on homework assignments. Cell Phones, Pagers and other electronic devices must be turned off during class.
