September 29 U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS — Governor Albert Bryan Jr. released the following statement congratulating Assistant U.S. Attorney Delia L. Smith on her nomination for U.S. Attorney nominee for the District of Virgin Islands: “It is with pride as a Virgin Islander that I congratulate AUSA Smith on her nomination for U.S. Attorney in the District of the Virgin Islands. While her 15-plus years working in that office are more than enough to qualify her to be the top federal prosecutor in the Territory, the fact that she is a native St. Johnian greatly enhances her qualifications because of her familiarity with our culture, our residents and the particular law enforcement issues we face,” Governor Bryan said. “Assistant U.S. Attorney Smith has been tireless in her efforts to wipe out the drug trafficking that spawns violent crime in our Territory, and I have no doubt she will continue to be a forceful deterrent in our federal law enforcement ranks. “It is always gratifying to see Virgin Islanders who have excelled and reached the highest achievements of their careers on a national level, and her success speaks to every resident of our community. I want to thank Delegate Stacey Plaskett for putting forward AUSA Smith’s name to President Biden and for helping to promote one of our own to head the U.S. Attorney’s Office and maintaining the Virgin Islands’ prominence on the national stage.” Assistant United States Attorney Smith has served in the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of the Virgin Islands since 2005, and from 2012 to 2014, she was detailed to work as a Trial Attorney in the United States Department of Justice’s Office of International Affairs. Prior to joining the Department of Justice, U.S. Attorney nominee Smith was an Assistant Attorney General in the Virgin Islands Department of Justice from 1999 to 2005. She received her Juris Doctorate from Texas Southern University in 1997 and her bachelor’s degree from the University of the Virgin Islands in 1993. The Bryan-Roach Administration is investing in the Territory’s people, infrastructure and future through transparency, stabilizing the economy, restoring trust in the government and ensuring that recovery projects are completed as quickly as possible.
