In accordance WM; the wish of the Colonial Councils of Saint Thomas and Saint John and Saint Croix, as ex- pressed in the joint resolution passed on April 4, 1824, in the following lan- guage, ‘‘that the Government of the Virgin Islands take such steps as may be necessary to inform the proper officials of the sense of this resoluiion ard to request that Senate Bill No. 2736 be either withdrawn or that no further action be taken regarding it.”7 His Es.cellency the Governcr on Saturday, April 5, 1924, forwarded by radio to the Secretary of the Navy the full text of the Resolution, and requested that its contents be communicated to the Chair- man of the S:nate Committe2 on 'Lerri- tories and lasular Possessions and to Senator Melean of Connecticut. LOCAL In view of the expected arrival of the s. s. Guiana on or about Friday morning, it is lequested advised that a direct mail for the Sta'es by this boat will be closed on Thursday, 10, at 4 p.m., pending defin- ite information concerning the steamer’s movements, The mail-sloop ‘‘Mizpah” will be dis- patched for St. Thomas this afternoon at the usual hour. Yet the 26,051 people who consti- tute the population of BSt. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John aie stiil subjeet to the Danish Colonial Law; the heading of whichs: “WE FREDERICK THE EIGHTH, by the grace of God King of Denmark, the Vandals and the Goths, Duke of Slesvig, Holstein, Stormarn, Ditsmarks- ken, Lauenborg and Oidenborg, MAKE 1T KNOWN by virtue of No. 17 in Law of this date concerning alterations in the Colonial Law for the Danish West India Is'nls of 27 November 1833 W= huave | issued the following Colonial Law tor | the Danish West India Islands. { Then follows the citation of the au- . thority which is to govern the islands . from that time ton. The supreme au- . thority is under that law, in all matters . exclusively relating to the affairs within . the boundaries of the islands vested in ' the ‘‘legislative power of the Kingdom.’’ : Apparently there has been no change | in this law since 1917. Onpe of the ' members of the Colonial Council, in talk- | ing to the wrirer, urged that American . newspapers bring to the atlention of the . Congress of the Unit-d States the ncces- . sity of an ameundment to this eolonial | law, or, better still, the substitution | therefor of a code of taws for the islands . which will meet the chan;red conditions . since 1917. In other words the people of | the Virzin Islands, U. S. A,, desire that | the *“U. 8. A.”’ shall mean something | more than the atiachment of the Eighth- | eenth Amendment to the laws of the i King of Denmark. f As a Winter Resort. | Away back sixty years agn the Virgin ' Islands were recommended as a great | winter resort. During the 40’s many ~ residents of the eastern states spent | their winters in_ St. Croix, and it is . pointed out that Jhurlow Weed, then the . Editor of the New York Times, wrote in | 1845: ‘'We have now been here six . weeks in Santa Cruz without experienc- . ing the lassitude of weariness of which | visitors complain. The weather has nct ' been inconveniently hot, though the the:- . momeler rate has ranged [rom 78 to 81 . degrees.”’ | St. Thomas. ; The island of St Thomas, as one ap- | proaches it from the nearby marine base . at Culebra, affords a wonderful picture as . the city of Charlo te Amalia, as it was | long called bu now known as the eity of | St. Thomas, comes into view.
