Mails close as per notice at the post office at 12 m. The trees on the public highways, no- tably the centre line and north side roads badly need trimming, in many places boughs and branches overhanging and drooping to the middle of the road, tops of automobiles ard other covered vehicles being scratched thereby. o 7 b The Murder {ase. Praliminary Hearing of People vs. (George Jemmott. (Concluded from yesterday’s Av18.) T'he Court now proceeded to take the evidence. . The first witness called was Mr. &n- --selmo Larser, who on being sworn, les- tifiad that on the motning of the 14th inst. after leaving the Post Office he en- tered the vard w erein was situated the house in which the deceased was resid- ing. 1t was his intention to pay a visit to the deceased who was his fiancee. On approaching the house, watle mid way the yard, he heard a report of 'a gunshot. He exclaimed, “*My God, who is shooting t. emselves.”” He came to a halt and stood up. Shortly after he saw aceused Jemmott going from behind the « house moving in a southerly direction, in a running attitude. (Here the witness gave a (emonstra- tion to the Court as to the exact attitude of accused at the time he saw him mov- ing southwards from the house.) On taking sight of the witness the ac- cused drew himself up and came toa halt. He, the accused, then turned back entered the house from the pack window and sang out ‘‘Larsen man, come and see this.”’ . Then the witness turned bick and went towards the front door / L there accused opened the cloth sereened door for him. On looking in, witness Saw the. young woman there witnh the wound on the left side of the head. She was sitting in a reciining pos 177, with the head bent slightly to tae righte while the blood was gushiug from the wonnd. r Her hands were in ber lao; nicees of sloth for clothes making were aroun her on the floor. A machine was in front of her. All this the witness testified he saw as he looked in from the door. He was seared and frizhiened at the sight and hesitated in ap) sacti o, a-n the accused asked him to go to call his wife. Witness then hurried across the sireet to Miss Nellie Benjamin’s shop where Jemmott’s wife was and told her that her sister was at the house blzeding. She got amazed and ran over, going on in front of the witness. As she reached the door and witness was about midway in the vard Jemmott requested him to call the Doctor. Witness left the yard to go in search or the Doector. Jemmott and his wife re- mained in the room where the girl lay. Soon after witness returned with the Doctor. He went into the room. The young woman was taken immediately to the Hospital on the stretcher under direc- tions from the Doctor. «
