Petersen, died at tke Hos- pital, age 8 months. OBITUARY. Mrs. THEODORA ARMSTRONG, age 62 years, widow of the late John Armstrong, died at her home in Frederiksted on Tuesdav afternoon after a long illness during the last weeks of which she was confined to her bed. The funeral took place yesterday atternoom and was largely attended by people from all parts of the island. Condolences are extended to the bereaved sisters aund other mourners. Mr. James Vattelle, master-mason and a respected taember ot the community in Frederiksted passed away also on Tuesday. The deceased is survived by children and other relatives to whom sympathy is conveyed. 1.OCAL Twenty odd bags of States mail arriv- -2d via the s. s. Guiana on Tuesday after- noon. The sloop Mizpah sailed with mails and passengers for St. T'homas at 6 p. m. Tuesday. U. S. Sub-Chaser 340 arrived here at noon on Tuesday bringing the pay officer who after paying off the marines return- ed by the boat at 3.45 p. m. Some mail was carried from and to St. Thomas on this trip. The show at St. Mary’s Hall on Tues- day night consisted of a very entertain- ing program which was much enjoyed by the audience - not as large a one as such films deserved to be accorded. The Theaire was the place to which pleasure seekers turned last night after a ratner quiet holiday. The Seecrsat Four was continued in highly attractive style. This fine show will be sereened ST loy Y 8 at Bethlehem this evening. See ad in this issue. The Native Brass Band opzned the day yesterday, tramping through tke town playing lively airs: a baseball match on Parade Ground later in the morning between the Merry Juvenile and Viking of this town was won by t 2e former by 5 runs; in the afternoon a football contest between the Alert and Merry Juvenile, score A. 0, M. J. 1 goal, and some masquerading with music on the streets are practically all the events ofa public natare in obse~vance of In- dependence Day. The Alert clubis un- derstood to have failed to score through admitted partiality of the referee toward the Merry Juvenile. MERRY JUVENILE WINS THE DAY. At about 10 30 a. m. yesterday, 4rn. of July, the Merry Juvenile Bassball Team lined up against the Viking Base- ball Team aad afier a very interesiing game of9 innings, the Merry Juvenile came out at the top, the score being 13 to8 respeciively. Special eredit is due to the boys from P2.R. who eghibited excel- lent playing. o the atternoon about 4.39 the Merry Juveniles lined up their foot- ball'team against the Alert Footbail Club. As was expected,there was hard rubbing, either side doing their very hest, but again the Merry Juveniles scored, and for the first time defeated the Alert ¥ootball Club, with the score 1 goal to none.—Com. bDemmsey-Gibbons Fight, W.lL&7r. 7. Fire in Porio Zico. Ponce, Porio Rico, July 4:h.—Fire started 1n the store rooms ‘ard lumber sheds of Sues Mayol Hnos and Co last night, buildings and sheds completely destreyed. Value about five bundred thousand dotlars partly covered by insur- ance. Lumber sheds still burning. TELEGRa MS. ST. CROIX STATION. London, June 30ih.—Saven London churches, Anglican and Romnan Catholie, have recertly been burned under circum- stances pointing (o deliberat: incendi- arism. The latest case occurred last aight, when worshippers going to even- csong saw smoke coming from the win- dows of St. Leonard’s Church, StreatX bam. It was found that fires had been started in three different parts of the church. The altar was damaged and the vestment cupbeoard destroyed. Qther church fires have been at St. Saviour’s, Clapham, St. Jude’s, Herne Hill, §t. James, Streatham, St. Matthew’s Brix- ton Hill, Corpus Christi, Brixton Hill Holy Trinity, Tulse Hille. These seven churches are within a radius of two miles of Brixton Hiil, but the police have no clue to the perpetrators. London, June 80th.—A Central News despateh from Rome says that Giuseppi Pretravallo, deputy speaker of .he Cham- ber, was stabbed at Naples yesterday. and is in a serious conditior. His assail- ant escaped. ‘ Halifax, N. S., June 30¢h.—No further word was received yesterday from Ber- muda concerning the steam r Caraquet, ashore there. The wrecking steamer Morritt left Norfolk, Va., yesterday morning and is expected to arrive along- side the stranded liner on Sunday. The question of replacing the Caraguet on the Canadian-West-Indian service, will likely rest, pending the decision of the salvage company whetber the Caraquet can be refloated and repaired. Mayence, June t9.h-—-Seven Germans have been sentenced te death by a French court martial for sabotage. The court condemned another man to penal servi- tude for life and sinhii another to five years imprisonment, on the same charge. London, June 2%th.—Mr. J. Ram:ay Mac Donald, leader of the Parliamentary Labour Purty, today was clected Chair- man of the Labour Tarty executive, to succeed Mr. Sydncey Webb. London, June 29th.—A list of the King’s birihday honours, delaved be- cause of the change in the Premiership, was gazetted tonight, Among them are Baroneteies for Sir Willlam Plender and George Alired Wiils and Kuiznthoods for the Rev Professor Hermann Gollan:z, Henry Joscph Lyneh of Kio Janeiro and Professor Wm.
