IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES JUNE 23, 1998 Ms. CHRISTIAN-GREEN (for herself, Ms. KILPATRICK, Mr. FRANK of Massa- chusetts, Ms. DELAURO, Mr. FILNER, Mr. SNYDER, Mr. WATTS of Okla- homa, Ms. EDDIE BERNICE JOHNSON of Texas, Mr. LIPINSKI, Mr. FROST, and Mr. DIXON) submitted the following resolution; which was referred to the Committee on the Judiciary RESOLUTION Relating to the emancipation of African slaves in the Danish West Indies, now the United States Virgin Islands. Whereas the annual observance of Emancipation Day on July 3 and National Independence Day on July 4 serves to connect Virgin Islanders and all Americans to their past and to reinforce their unwavering commitment to pre- serve, protect, and defend human rights and freedom: Now, therefore, be it Resolved, That it is the sense of the House of Rep- 1 resentatives that the emancipation of African slaves in 2 what is now the United States Virgin Islands is part of 3 2 •HRES 487 IH the process of extending civil rights to all individuals in 1 what is now the United States. 2 Æ
