Resolution—That the name ""SAINT CROIX’’ is the official name of this Island and the namne ‘'MUNICI- " PALITY of ST. CROIX’’ shall here- after be used in ofificially designat- ing this Municipality. Introduced by 2nd Appointed Member (Noll). COLONIAL COUNCIL BILL No. 7. 2nd Session 1919---1920. RESOLUTION. Be it resolved by the Colonial Council jor St. Croix in Session asgembled: ‘l'hat the name “SAINT CrOIX”’ is the official name of this island and the name “MUNICIPALITY oif ST. CROIX’* shall hereafter be ST C K1 X A YV 18 used in officially designating this municipality in any pubplic voucher, .contract or document. , D. NOLL. 2nd, Appointed Member. The Chairman remarked: The fact that the Treaty has fixed the name ‘‘St. Croix’’ :io this Island is sufficient to es- tablish the fact that it is the official name given to the Island, but as the name San- ta Cruz i: often used in officiallydesigna- ting the Island it is thought best to bring this Resolution before the Council. : Porto Rico was first owned by Spain and when it became an American pos- session it then became necessary to de- termine whether its official name shculd be Porto Rico or Puerto Rico and their legislature had to take a vote on the question. Now the same question has come to us in this Island, and it is with this object that the member has intro- duced his resolution so that the various departments can use the official name. 2nd Appointed Member (Noll) in in- troducing the Resolution said that he had no particular remarks to make, but personally he thinks as the name St. Crcix is used in the Treatyitis sufficient to establish the fact that it is the official rame of this Island. It was then put t, the vote and carried that the Resolution be fu thered. It was also put to the vote “°nd car- ried that the Resolution be adopted at one discussion. No one requested the word further, the Secretary (Canegata) read the Re- solution and the Chairman put same to the vote. It was unanimously adopted. Item 3. Colonial Council Bill No. 8. Resolution—That the funds appropri- ated in thebudget for the present fis- cal year for maintenance, under the Street and Land Divisions of the Pub- lic Works Department shall be availa- ble for paying salaries to regulariy employed watchmen, caretakers and Jamp-lighters of Divisions. Intro- duced by 2nd Appoirted IMember (Noll). COLONIAL COUNCIL BILL No. 8. 2nd Session 1919---1920. RESOLUTION. Be it resolved by the Colontal Council for St. Crowx in Sesston assembled: That the funds appropriated in the budget for the present fiscal vear for maintenance, under the Street and Land Divisions of the Pablic Works Department, shall be available for paying salaries to regularly employec watchmen, caretakers and lamplighters of Divisions, and such payments shall be passed in the accounts of the Disbursing Officer of the Colonial Treasury. NOLL, 2ind Appointed Member. 2nd Appointed Member (Noll) intro- duced the bill and said that all the mon- ey appropriated for the Street Depart- ment under the Public Works Department is budgeted under maintenance and as there are no salaries provided for the men employed under that branch of the Department it is thought necessary to bring this Resoiution before the Council so as to provide salaries for them. Despatehing Secretary (O’ Hayan) re- marked: Mr. Chairman. There seems to be, according to my mind, some few technicalities which should be taken care of so as to protect the Disbursing Officer. The budget specifically provides for sala- ries under al' departments; and also un- der Public Works Departinent in the Ad- ministrative Division. The salaries ap- prepriated are just sufficient ‘o ecare sou the Administrative Officers, such as, the Assistant Public Works Otlicer, the Build- ing and Street Inspector’s Divisions, but we have regularly employ:d men who ! act as caretakers and lamplighters and the like; while I feel sure that it is the inteation of the Council that the salaries of these regulariy empleved men come out of maintenance, some question might arice in the mind of an auditor as to the propriety of doing this, and ! therefore thoughtitnecess .rv to have this point settled by the Councii. It #as then put to the vote and carried that the Resolution be furtherad. It was also put to the vete and carried that the Resolution be adopied at one discussion. No one requested the word further, the Secretary (Canegata) read the Resolu- tion and the Chairman put same to the vote. It was unanimously adonted. The Chairman then gave a recess of 20 minutes. srd Appointed Member (Armstrong) entered the meeting during the recess.
