News was received by cable last night, of the death at New Rochelle, N. Y.. on May 3llst. of Mrs. Ernesta Wol- terding, widow of the late Peter G. Wolterding formerly a cierk in the offi- ces of the Hamburg American Steam- ship Company here, in the early 80’s, from heart failure. The deceased, who was known to a large cirele of friends and acquaint- ances, hid for some time been a sufferer from heart trouble, and left for the States about two years ago. She leaves to mourn her loss, several children and grand children —among the former of whom are our fellow-townsmen Messrs. Camille and Volmey Wolterding—to whom in this nour of great sorrow, we beg to tender our sincere condolences.-- St. Thomas Mail Notes, June Sth. . (CUBAN SUGAR CROP PRODUCTION TO MARCH 3187 Messrs. Guma and Mejer, the well- known Cuban statisticians, have issued their annual monthly statement zoncern- ing the sugar production in Cuba this season ap to and including Mareh 3lst. and compaiing the same with each of the previous two years. The total pro- duction to March 31st. insofar as deliver- les at the ports are concerned, amounts to " 1,990,916 long tons. This includes the lecal consumption which is only es timated at 24,500 tons for one-fourth of a year, and would seem te be quite a small consumption for more that two milliors of people 'in the land where so much sugar is made. The produetion reported to March 31st. inclusive, this year, practically two millions of tons, stands out as against a million and three quarters at the same date last year, and as against nearly u miliion and three quarters the year be- fore. Os the sugars thus produced 1,307,000 long tons have already been exported, leaving 659,000 tons in the warehouses in Cuba. At the same date, the exports last year reached 929,000 iong tons, and the year before 817,000 long tons. Os the exported sugar, 828000 tons went to ports north of Hatteras: 95,000 tors to New Orlcans; 7.000 tons to the interior of the United States: 15,000 tons to Galveston’ 29,000 tons to Savanuah: 40, 000 tons to Canada; 6,000 tons to Spain: and 287,000 tons to Europe. It will be noted here that the three ports north of Hateras and New Orleans together got over QOO 000 tons of surar, while all of Europe including Spsain, got but 292 000 tons, or, but about one-third of what our Atlantic and Gulf poris got, which is very gstggestive of the large exports of sugars jto Europe from the Atlantic and Gulf ports. It would seem novr to be generally ad. mitted {that the final output of sugar from Cuba will leave the world in a com paratively impoverished condition, s« far as that great staple is concerned.
