(McLaren/Hart) is submitting this letter to update the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on the progress of the installation of a fence at the Virgin Island Chemical Site located in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. Caribbean Hydro-Tech, Inc., a company located on St. Croix, has been retained to perform the work. All necessary permits (earth change and building) have been obtained. Initially, clearing work along the fenceline will take place. Depending on weather conditions, this work will take place during late January and be completed over a two-week time period. Silt fence will be installed along the length of the River Gut to prevent any erosion during field activities. Fencing materials are scheduled to arrive on the island in early February, with installation activities to be completed by mid- February. Proposed modifications to our November 24, 1999 correspondence regarding the details of the fence installation are as follows: (1) a 20-foot wide access gate will be installed at the entrance to the Site (as opposed to a 16-foot wide gate) to allow large equipment to easily pass through during future demolition activities; and (2) a 3-foot wide walk-through gate will be installed to the north of the AST Area to allow for offsite access to monitoring wells MW-8 and MW-10. Please contact me as soon as possible if these proposed modifications are not acceptable. If you have any questions or require additional information, please do not hesitate to contact me at (908)647-8111. Very truly yours.
