Historically American. Uniquely Caribbean. Globally Interactive. Office of the President November 22, 2008 Dr. Peter F. Burnham, Chair, Middle States Commission on Higher Education 3624 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104-2680 Subject: 2008 UVI Faculty Policy Manual Dear Dr. Burnham: At the request of the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE), the University of the Virgin Islands submitted a progress letter to the Commission on September 1, 2008. At the time of the report, the Board of Trustees, the body authorized by the charter of the University to act and approve a faculty policy manual was not scheduled to meet until the first week of November 2008. This communication serves as an addendum to the Progress Letter that was submitted on September 1, 2008. During the period between the submission of September 1, 2008 progress letter and this addendum, all outstanding issues pertaining to a faculty policy manual have been addressed. In particular, critical areas such the tenure process, a post-tenure review process and the grievance process have now been settled. The University of the Virgin Islands now has a 2008 Faculty Policy Manual (FPM) approved by the Board of Trustees. Additionally, to ensure that the Faculty Policy Manual continues to be current, a faculty policy committee has been formed and is charged with working with the Provost to ensure that regular updates are made to the 2008 FPM as needed. Work also continues on the bylaws and other subsidiary correlates of the 2008 FPM. As the document is implemented, there may arise occasions when policies within the 2008 FPM may need to be modified to reflect contemporary intent and aspirations, and such changes will be considered by the faculty and the administration. The University, through this communication, attests that it has a fully approved and implemented Faculty Policy Manual that meets the criteria of Standard 10 of MSCHE. Thank you for your consideration of our report and progress. We look forward to hearing from the Commission regarding this element of its decision to reaffirm the accreditation of the University of the Virgin Islands. Sincerely, LaVerne E.
