ST (Al 42Vl LOCAL Referring to previous ecomment on re- ce pt of old St. Thomas newspaper ex- enanTes, there came to hand by yester- dav’s mail, Mail Notes from the 5.h to 13th inclusive, all at one time. We have been asked to mention that the Native Brass Band will give a coan- cert on the wharf tomorrow afternoun and as will be seen from the programme published in this issue the Industrial Brass Band wili give a concert in the evening. 3 lincs of rain was mo2asured at the Fort-this morning. S The U. 3. S. Ranger sailed from here for Saint Thomas yesterday afternoon. She carried a mail for St. Thomas. ' Mr. Quincy Adams. fisherman of this town, has bhad the misfortune to lose all his fishpots with buoys, ropes, ete., which bad been placed at sea to the east of the island and were dragzgad by the Ranger in its sounding operations. Mr, Adams in persom was on the spot and made desperate efforts to save one pot but endargered the safety of himself and his hnat and bad tc abandon hope. A warning notice from the commanding offi- cer of the Ranger nas been published in -the St. Croix Tribune, why it is limited to the Tribune we do not know, but of course the fishermen are not all subscrib- ers to the Tribune, and Mr. Adams who is an old subseriber of the Avis was not informed. A notice of this kind appear- ing in the newspapers should be printed in all of them, and when we got (o know of its being in the hands of the [lrihune we sougnt to get it from the ship for insertion in our columnas, bat failed to do so. Mr. Qiiney Al- ams who s one of the hardest work- ingmen of our eommunity has sustaine:] an outright loss of some $69 and put out of earoing his livelihood for some time. This is very discourazing in these tough days. The Despatehing Soeretary kind- jv gave Mr. Adams advices as to the noti'e published from the Ranger and advised him to take the matter up wi h the Governor. All fishermen should be informed of the zone of operations ol the sounding 'ships to avoid hav- ing the experience of Mr. Adams who has the sympathy of all persons learn- ing of his loss. ‘ Well-Drilling In St. Croix REMARKS OF AN EXPERT. I thoroughly believed the supoiy was there, but only the drill could tell, and it has been proven, God has provided for all our needs and water ijs one of the moust important, for all animal and vegetable life must have it, and I did oot for a moment think Go«d had neglected the Virgin Islands and those who live there, The only questior in my mind was about the quantity, but I did believe there was enough. Os course it was nnt to be ex- pected that Artisian Wells in the Islands would proluce by natvral flow one million or more gailons each twenty four hours as some weils do in our South Atlantic and Gult States, noris it needed in the Islands, The well just drilled being only 70 feet deep is not a test forf;ea! and deep water veins. Ir seems, in fact, to be not a wa- ter vein but a deposit of water stored in the fissures of the rock into which the drill was sunk. - Such non flowing water deposits are found in all drilled wells ba- fore water veins with pressure, or head, enough to produce flowing wells are drill- ed into and made use of. O the many wells which I drilled dur- ing twenty odd years only two were non- flowing and those filled with water to within ten feet of ground surface. One vielded enough by pumping to supply the Water Works of the City in which it was located and the other for a plantation on which it was drilled. Fiowing water veins were found be- tween 30 and 600 feet below sur- face, and these were located by sinking deep test wells some of which were more than 1,800 feet in depth, Then what other wells were needed in that section were only drilled into the best water veins found in the test well, Siach a deep test well should be drilled just above the location of the proposed water reservoir to supply the proposed municipal,Water Works for Christiansied. 1o make a safe and successful test an ex- perienced driller who is familiar with the working of your well driiling outfit should be employed; and the manufacturers of this ootfit can send such a driller to do your work. {f those who wish Artesian Nelle on their estates should now purchase well- dritling rigs, pips,- ete.- and have a first class, up to date-driller sent with it they can haive their water supply at first cost and then sink wells for their neighbors.
